Recent Poll: Abby Voters Want More Policing, Say Crime Top Issue

November 8, 2007
Abbotsford

In a recent Abbotsford-wide poll in which voters were asked “What are some of the important issues facing Abbotsford today?” a full 21% of respondents answered crime and drug use. When asked “What are some things Abbotsford city council could do to lower the crime rate in the city?” a full 43% said more police should be hired and/or existing policing should be made more effective.

“The results of this independent scientific poll make it clear that the majority of Abbotsford voters feel very strongly about the need for more police officers and better policing in the city. Apparently, Abbotsford residents believe the local police force is not only understaffed but needs to be made more effective. Local politicians have continued to allow the city’s crime rate to spiral out-of-control, resulting in Abbotsford now having the 3rd worst crime rate in Canada. The voters of Abbotsford are rejecting the culture of impotence that has plagued the city’s law-enforcement policies to date,” said Trish Kolsto, president of Abbotsford Families United.

Of the 300 voters surveyed, 92% said they plan to vote in next year’s Abbotsford municipal election.

The independent telephone poll of 300 voters in Abbotsford was conducted October 6th and 9th by Winnipeg-based NRG Research Group, a leading North American public opinion company. It has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points. The poll was paid for by Abbotsford Families United. To this end, we bring together families, individuals, churches, businesses and other organizations to provide a unified thrust in promoting these values, and become involved in the moral, cultural, and political issues that affect our city.

The following principles guide the issues we address on a municipal level:

  • We believe that children are a heritage from God and a blessing from His hand
  • We believe that human life is of inestimable worth and significance in all its dimensions, including the unborn, the aged, the mentally handicapped, the physically challenged and every other condition of humanity, from conception to natural death
