Would YOU let your children look at this material? --- Sexually-explicit magazines at the grocery till.
January 28, 2008
Abbotsford
Parents in Abbotsford have asked Abbotsford Families United to stand with them against the constant barrage of sexually-explicit magazines their children are being forced to view at certain grocery store checkouts in the city.
Here is an example of what these parents are complaining about:
- “Secrets of Male Arousal – A surprising trigger to his deepest sexual cravings” (Jul 07 Cosmo)
- “What even experienced chicks forget to do in bed” (Jul 07 Cosmo)
- “The Sex Position He Craves” (Dec 07 Cosmo)
- “A shocking thing 68% of chicks do in bed” (Dec 07 Cosmo)
- “Secret Sex turn-ons” (Nov 07 Redbook)
- “5 Alarm Sex – Set off all your senses” (Marie Claire, May 06)
- “7 Hottest Sex Tips of all time” (Marie Claire, Dec 07)
- “Erotic Sex – 7 boundary-pushing moves all men secretly crave and You’ll get off on too” (Cosmo, Aug 07)
- “Feel Sex More Intensely” (Cosmo, Sep 07)

In response, and in keeping with our mission of defending and promoting traditional family values, AFU has begun asking for Family Friendly Checkouts, where families with young children can buy their groceries without being visually assaulted by magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Star, US Weekly, and the Enquirer.
Family Friendly Checkouts are not a new concept, and have been in place at large chains across the United States, including the Fred Meyer store in Bellingham. Click here to see what we mean. The only difference between a Family-Friendly checkout and a regular checkout is the absence of magazines and DVD’s and other material that many parents find objectionable.
“Exposing young children to lewd adult content is damaging. Yet sexually-explicit magazines are routinely displayed at almost every grocery store checkout in Abbotsford. The large grocery stores apparently think it is ok for young children to read headlines about drugs, rape, orgasms and oral sex while Mommy pays for the groceries. Right now there is no option for parents who take their kids shopping --- they are forced to use these awful checkouts. So we’re encouraging all concerned parents to voice their opinion to the store managers by telling them “either give us Family Friendly Checkouts, or we’ll take our business elsewhere," said Trish Kolsto of Abbotsford Families United.
Abbotsford Families United invites local parents to join in this endeavor of bringing Family Friendly Checkouts to Abbotsford, for the wellbeing of the city’s children.
AFU is providing an online petition for concerned parents to sign. It can be accessed at
